The Reed 5A tonearm is a tangential-pivot (linear) tonearm and quite an engineering marvel.
Product Description
Elevate your vinyl listening experience with the Reed 5A tonearm, a masterful blend of classic engineering and cutting-edge technology. Designed by Lithuanian expert Vidmantas Triukas and unveiled at the 2019 Audio Gourmet show, the Reed 5A is a marvel of modern audio engineering.
Featuring a unique ‘Tangential 90 Degree Pivot Reference’ design, the 5A combines tangential tracking with pivoted mechanics, utilizing the ancient Thales theorem and Double Birch calculations to ensure perfect 90° alignment with the groove. This innovative geometry minimizes distortion and maximizes sonic accuracy.
The Reed 5A is built with high-end components, including low-noise ceramic rolling bearings and sapphire/molybdenum carbide thrust bearings, ensuring smooth operation and exceptional performance. Its integrated level and horizontal plane adjuster simplify setup, while the option to choose from five distinct wood finishes allows for customization that complements any setup.
This tonearm seamlessly integrates with both high-end and entry-level systems, revealing the full potential of your turntable, cartridge, and phono stage. The Reed 5A eliminates the typical ‘pushing’ or ‘dragging’ effects found in parallel trackers, combining the best aspects of unipivot and gimbal-bearing designs to deliver unparalleled clarity, rhythm, and dynamic range.
Hear your favorite albums as never before—free from distortion and with stunning detail. The Reed 5A stands as a testament to the evolution of turntable technology, providing an extraordinary listening experience at an accessible price point. Discover the Reed 5A and transform your vinyl playback into a world of sonic perfection.
- P1, O1, P3 – Thales’ semicircle,
- P1-A1-P3, P1-A2-P3, P1-A3-P3 angles are 90⁰ each,
- A1,1B1 = A2,1B2= A3,1B3 segments represent tonearm length,
- 1B – vertical axis of the tonearm,
- 1P2 – the center of the circle, which is drawn through three points -1B1,1B2,1B3,- axis of rotation of the backlink component
- 2P2 – the center of the circle, which is drawn through three points -2B1,2B2,2B3,- axis of rotation of the front link component
- 1B1,2B1 = 1B2,2B2 = 1B3,2B3 – tonearm lever.
- The Armtube suspension system is similar to the one used in the Reed 3P tonearm.
- Tonearm’s backlink uses low-noise ceramic rolling bearings.
- The lever uses a low-noise ceramic rolling bearing and rests on the sapphire–molybdenum carbide thrust bearing.
- Sapphire–molybdenum carbide thrust bearings are also used for the tonearm’s front link, vertical and horizontal axes.
- The tonearm has VTA and azimuth setup and can be configured with Reed or SME (universal headshell connector) headshells.
- To make sure the tonearm setup is precisely horizontal, the tonearm has an integrated level and horizontal plane adjuster.
- Compared to regular pivot tonearms, Reed 5A does not require anti-skating and has much less absolute tracking error (max. tracking error is +/- 4 Minute of Angle (MOA) (Fig.2). Pivot tonearms – approx. 1.2 – 2.5 deg. (Fig.3).
- Compared to other tangential tonearms, Reed 5A does not require any additional devices to work (e.g. compressors, electronic controllers), is compact, and can be easily mounted on a wide range of turntables.
Reviews
hi-fi+
“We love vinyl for its sound quality, but sometimes wish it was more precise and less distorted. However, CD and streaming are arguably more accurate but less enjoyable. The Reed 5A simply wipes away those vinyl limitations. In the process, it makes digital, open-reel and other vinyl systems appear more of a compromise than LP replay.”
