The Reed 5T is the company’s tangential (linear) tonearm domain. Featuring a unique design, innovative technology, and high quality, and is dedicated to true audio passion. The Reed 5T is one of the most advanced tonearms made.
Product Description
The Reed 5T Tonearm is technically a tangentially tracking pivoted tonearm. The working principle of the 5T is based on Thales’ theorem (when the center of the circumcircle of a triangle lies inside the triangle then this is a right triangle, and the center of the circumcircle will lie on the hypotenuse), given three non-collinear points, only one circle can be drawn with a finite radius that passes through all three points.
- P1, O1, P3 – Thales’ semicircle,
- The Angles P1-A1-P3, P1-A2-P3, and P1-A3-P3 are each 90 degrees,
- Segments A1B1 = A2B2 = A3B3 and represent the length of your tonearm,
- B – Is the Tonearm’s vertical axis,
- P2 represents the center of a circle, drawn through three points – B1, B2, and B3 (tonearm rotation axis),
- P3 – Linear Sensor Array,
- BP3 – Represents the beam of the Laser.
The arm tube suspension system is similar to the one used in Reed’s 2G tonearm, and the tonearm’s turning part is based on a low-noise thrust-sleeve bearing. For angular rotation, the tonearm is designed with a limited rotation sectional torque motor. The tonearm’s position is controlled by a laser and linear sensor array.
The Reed 5T tonearm features a user-replaceable arm tube, allowing the user to change the tonearm’s effective mass, to ideally match the cartridge compliance. The SRA and Azimuth adjustments can also be made easily on the fly.
Compared to pivoted tonearm designs, the Reed 5T has the following advantages:
- Smaller moment of inertia,
- No need for an anti-skating mechanism,
- The maximum tracking error is +/- 5 Minute of Angle (MOA). (Figure 2). Pivot tonearms usually have max tracking errors up to 1.5 deg.
The Reed 5T has advantages compared to other tangential tonearms:
- A several times smaller moment of inertia,
- Elimination of complicated additional devices (no air compressor),
- Compact and sleek design,
- A similar effective mass in both the vertical and horizontal directions.
