Product Description

Jaguar is pleased to offer EAR electronics, some of the most musical tube gear in existence. When it comes to high-end tube amplifiers, there are hundreds of brands on the market, many costing much more than EAR. However, at Jaguar we’re only interested in amps like EAR or Lamm, which are created by visionary designers and stand above the others as truly unique and special. Numerous available models allow you to select one that’s the best match for your system and the sound character you’re going for.

The EAR Phono Classic Deluxe is an upgrade from the 834P, it features a chrome face-plate, updated chassis mount RCAs, tighter tolerances, an internal tube rolling switch, and a gold plated selector knob… it looks as good as it sounds. The Phono Classic has one of the most liquid midranges we’ve heard… which makes it absolutely enthralling and addictive. Moving Magnet/Moving Coil selectable, with 70dB of gain in the MC setting making it compatible with virtually every MC cartridge on the market. There is nothing as affordable and versatile in a tube phono stage that comes close to the listening pleasure you will receive from this world-class design! Tubes are three 12AX7 to achieve great sound; these long-lasting tubes are easily accessible, allowing more ambitious users to roll a wide variety of tubes (the synergy with the stock tubes is difficult to beat).

Reviews

“Sonically the EAR was without electronic edge or glare, with a non-analytic cast to the proceedings. It tended to focus on the entirety of the music rather than breaking each recording down to its component parts. I find this ability more musically satisfying than components that neglect the forest for the trees. Transient control was very good, with good tracking of the decay of notes. Soundstaging and stereoscopy were believable and non-intrusive…I never found myself squinting with my ears or baffled by any aspect of the musical proceedings. I found noise to be a non-issue also.”
– Paul Szabady, Stereo Times

“The EAR 834P is a remarkable piece of work: a reference-quality phono preamplifier that would feel at home in a system of any price. At its sticker price it’s downright obscene. If you treasure analog as I do, particularly if you’re a fan of well-recorded classical works, you should treat yourself to an audition of the EAR.”
– Robert J. Reina, Stereophile

About EAR

EAR (formerly “Esoteric Audio Research”) is the brainchild of Tim de Paravicini, whose name has been associated since the 1970s with electronics of the highest fidelity. De Paravicini’s innovative techniques have not only borne fruit in products for EAR but in designs for some of the world’s most highly regarded electronics manufacturers. Some of these designs have been continually prized—and sought—by discerning listeners for decades after their introduction.

Tim de Paravicini has also made unique contributions to the world of professional recording and mastering. Users of his tape recording systems, microphones, and other recording technology include performers Pink Floyd and Lenny Kravitz, the Altarus and Water Lily record labels, and renowned recording and mastering engineers like Robert Ludwig, Joe Gastwirt, and James Guthrie. One of the world’s highest-ranked mastering facilities, The Exchange in London, uses two playback systems in which the entire chain–from tape machines and equalizers to cutter amplifiers and monitoring equipment—is EAR-designed and built. Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs uses his LP cutting system, as well as a playback tape deck with his electronics.

EAR amplifiers are unequaled in their ability to deliver a pure rendition of the signal fed into them, free from the colorations and distortions of most amplifiers. Tim de Paravicini has been instrumental in investigating the role of ultrasonic resonances in amplifier circuits and their effect on transient response. He has also undertaken significant original research on the subjective effects of distortion. This research has not only facilitated the interpretation of amplifier measurements but has shed light on the correlation between measurements and sound quality. The results are easy to appreciate—EAR amplifiers are among the most accurate amplifiers ever made.

The T+A S 300 is a beautifully engineered compact floor-standing loudspeaker that combines elegant design with exceptional acoustic performance. Despite its slim profile—just 21 cm wide and 105 cm tall (8.3″ × 41.4″)—the S 300 delivers the scale, dynamics, and clarity expected from far larger speakers.

Designed with the same philosophy that defines the entire series, the S 300 features solid aluminum cabinets, high-performance drive units, and precision crossover technology. The result is a wide, open soundstage with minimal distortion, impressive dynamic range, and powerful, controlled bass.

Advanced Driver Technology

At the heart of the S 300’s performance are its newly developed high-end drive units.

Two powerful bass drivers deliver deep, high-pressure bass that remains controlled even at high listening levels. The dedicated midrange driver ensures accurate reproduction of vocals and instruments, offering a lively and dynamic character that brings music to life.

Completing the system is an advanced super-treble dome, designed to reproduce high frequencies with speed, airiness, and precision—without harshness or edge.

A carefully engineered three-way crossover network integrates all drivers seamlessly, creating a large, spacious soundstage and smooth frequency balance across the entire spectrum.

Precision Cabinet Engineering

The S 300’s solid aluminum cabinet offers significant advantages over traditional wooden enclosures. Its design allows for greater internal volume, helping extend bass performance while maintaining structural rigidity and minimizing unwanted resonance.

Specially developed high-performance bass drivers with powerful magnet systems and triple-surround suspensions allow for exceptionally long and controlled cone travel. This enables the speakers to produce deep, powerful bass while remaining stable and distortion-free, even at higher volumes.

High-Performance Drive Units

The S 300 incorporates carefully matched drivers designed to deliver exceptional accuracy:

  • Super-treble dome extending response beyond 30,000 Hz for airy, detailed high frequencies
  • Precision midrange driver covering the critical 300–2000 Hz vocal range with natural tone and dynamics
  • Resonance-free stiffened cones for clean, controlled sound reproduction
  • Triple-surround suspension system that eliminates overshoot and maintains precision at high levels

The crossover network uses high-grade components and precise tuning to ensure optimal driver integration and effortless performance.

Stability and Isolation

For optimal bass performance, the S 300 must be firmly coupled to the floor while remaining isolated from unwanted vibration. To achieve this, T+A developed precision-machined stainless-steel spikes.

These heavy spikes can be configured with pointed metal tips for maximum stability or protective glide pads for delicate flooring, ensuring both performance and flexibility in different listening environments.

Built to Exceptional Standards

T+A loudspeakers are known for their meticulous craftsmanship, and the S 300 is no exception. Every detail—from driver design to cabinet construction—is executed to extremely high standards, including the internal components hidden from view.

The result is a loudspeaker capable of delivering deep, controlled bass, lifelike vocals, and an expansive, three-dimensional soundstage—perfect for listeners who demand both refined design and high-end audio performance.

“We loved everything from the quality crates/boxes used to the cabinet design to the performance. In the article he also mentions several other pieces of T+A that he has heard and that have been reviewed in TAS. He also talks about the DAC 8 DSD that one of the other reviewers got him to buy, and happy that he did!”

“I do want to emphasize that the qualities described above were not evident when the S 300s were freshly unpacked—they needed 150–200 hours of playing music to come into their own. Before that, the speakers were quite “accurate” with loads of detail, yet provided only a very ordinary listening experience. With time, the preternatural clarity remained, joined by an organic ease and naturalness surely related to the tonal verisimilitude noted above. Loudspeakers under $20,000 are the class of products I cover at shows, and I’ve not heard ones better than the S 300s. Sonically, they hold their own with competing models from Wilson and Magico that cost thousands more, despite having to cross an ocean to get here, and the T+As will likely get higher marks for appearance than products from those other two fine manufacturers. Most importantly, the Talis S 300 can make you forget that you are listening to a recording.”
