Product Description

P 3100 HV Preamplifier

The P 3100 HV from T+A is a high-end preamplifier designed to play a central role in premium audio systems. As the component responsible for switching, amplifying, and transmitting delicate low-level signals, a preamplifier must preserve signal integrity at every stage—and the P 3100 HV is engineered with this objective in mind.

Constructed using a fully discrete, symmetrical circuit design and high-grade components throughout, the unit is housed in a solid, precision-built chassis designed to minimize interference and maximize performance. While it follows the design philosophy of the T+A P 3000 HV Preamplifier, the P 3100 HV introduces a series of refinements, particularly within the preamplifier stage, resulting in even greater precision and sonic transparency.

A newly developed circuit topology helps compensate for transistor temperature variations, ensuring stable voltage control during operation. This design also removes coupling capacitors from the signal path through pure DC coupling, a technique that contributes to greater signal purity and improved overall sound stability.

The power supply section has also been enhanced, featuring increased power capacity and improved shielding. An oversized 115 VA toroidal transformer further strengthens performance by delivering stable, low-noise power—helping the P 3100 HV achieve the level of clarity, control, and refinement expected in a reference-grade audio system.

High Voltage Technology

The P 3100 HV from T+A incorporates the company’s distinctive High Voltage (HV) technology, a design approach that operates at significantly higher voltages than those typically found in conventional audio components. In this design, the preamplifier stages can operate at voltages of up to 100V, while associated amplifier stages in the HV series may reach as high as 360V.

This elevated operating voltage—similar in concept to the principles used in traditional valve amplifiers—helps keep signal modulation within the stages extremely low. The result is exceptional linearity, minimal distortion, and a remarkably wide dynamic range, allowing delicate musical details and powerful dynamics to be reproduced with clarity and control.

High Voltage technology is a defining characteristic across T+A’s HV series and is used in a variety of components, including digital source devices such as the T+A MP 3100 HV as well as their preamplifiers and power amplifiers. By applying this engineering philosophy throughout the signal chain, these systems aim to achieve consistently high levels of sonic precision and performance.

Precision Construction

The P 3100 HV from T+A is built with meticulous attention to engineering detail, reflecting the design principles typically found in reference-level audio components. Its rear connector layout highlights a true symmetrical double-mono architecture, where the left and right channels are kept completely independent to maintain signal purity and minimize crosstalk.

Inside the chassis, the preamplifier circuit boards are identically constructed and carefully positioned beneath the top cover, helping to reduce the potential impact of electromagnetic interference. Each board is placed within its own shielded compartment formed by thick aluminum panels, ensuring physical and electrical isolation from the power supply and mains circuitry.

The core circuit topology is based on a differential cascode amplifier design using carefully selected J-FET transistors. Built entirely with discrete components and without operational amplifiers, the design focuses on maintaining excellent linearity while minimizing the need for heavy negative feedback.

This approach allows the circuitry to handle signal voltages up to 80 Vss without distortion, supporting wide dynamic capability and maintaining clarity even during complex musical passages—an achievement that distinguishes the engineering of this high-end transistor preamplifier.

Reviews

“The P 3100 HV exudes class, and not just because it’s big, solidly built – it weighs as much as some power amps at 28kg – and immaculately finished. The controls have wonderful precision, from that hefty volume control to the reworked front panel touch-buttons, which have been retuned for greater sensitivity, and the whole thing is a delight to use. Even the metal-clad remote control is a cut above the norm. “
